The Malinovsky District Court of Odessa ordered the defendant in fraud to read fiction.

This was reported by Chitomo with reference to the court's verdict.

The court found that the defendant, the owner of an online store selling helium balloons, received an order for UAH 25,600, but did not send the goods to her. He spent the money at his own discretion. Subsequently, The defendant was mobilized. He is currently serving in the military.

In addition, he was required to read the following books:

“Boarding School” by Sergei Zhadan

“Rough Notebook” by Agota Christophe

“Conversation of Travelers about True Happiness in Life” by Grigory Skovoroda.

“Reading such literature, in my opinion, should distract a person from evil thoughts and focus on real life, on the categories of good and evil. And if you are very attentive to details, then it is possible to see both the thirst for beauty, and next to it, manifestations of love for people. And indeed, sensitivity never has a chance against kindness, a sense of honor will not be replaced by self-love or vanity, and a sense of duty will be unattainable for the eternal – benefit and convenience,” the verdict says.

Do military men read at the front?

The following is noted about the benefits of reading Grigory Skovoroda: “A philosophical book known in Ukrainian literature in the form of a friendly dialogue really defines the meaning of being and the direction of thoughts that a person should have. According to the author, achieving general happiness is possible only through hard work.”

It is also noted that it would be wrong if you only need to read about a distant war. The novel by Ukrainian writer Serhiy Zhadan “Boarding School” (2017) is a vivid description of the beginning of the events of the war in the East of Ukraine, when each of the Ukrainians could not believe in such a development of events.

“This is precisely about the events when the fog of “brotherhood” had not yet cleared, and Cain had already killed Abel, only not everyone knew about it or did not want to know. The story is interesting because an ordinary day for an ordinary person turned into a terrible race between life and death. And only true love for a child can overcome all fears, can make a hero out of an ordinary teacher. To see ordinary human relationships, when in the routine of everyday life, in the hotbeds of war, you lose not only human feelings and even your face, but also lose touch with reality,” the verdict says.

 • Last year, a court in the Rivne region ordered a man who stole from his sister to read the Civil Code of Ukraine and the story “Kaidasheva Family” by Ivan Nechuy-Levytsky.
 • In 2022, the Primorsky Court of Odessa ordered a pro-Russian Internet agitator to read books by Ukrainian writers about Soviet repressions.
 • In 2021, the Malinovsky Court of Odessa ordered the perpetrator to read the children's novel “Polyanna” by Eleanor Porter. Earlier, the same court decided to read works by classics of world and Ukrainian literature to two criminals.
