Moldova's Parliament Recognizes Russia as Main Threat in New Defense Strategy

The document contains provisions on factors that pose a threat to Moldova's national security – the war in Ukraine, its potential expansion to the country's neighboring Odessa region, hybrid attacks by the Kremlin, the Russian military contingent in occupied Transnistria, and the unrecognized “republic's” own armed forces.

Moldova seeks to increase defense funding and improve army training so that in the global Global Firepower combat readiness rating, in 10 years, the country's troops would rise from the penultimate 144th place to at least 134th.

NATO, according to the text of the strategy, “plays a decisive role in deterring aggression,” but Moldova does not intend to change its neutral status, so the state will not try to join the Alliance.

  • During the massive attack on Christmas Day, a Russian missile violated Moldovan airspace, which was confirmed by President Maia Sandu.
