The Foreign Ministry wants to see our country in the Alliance.
Elina Valtonen >During a visit to Kyiv, Foreign Minister and Head of Finland to the OSCE Elina Valtonen said that she considers Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty to be the only effective guarantee of security for Ukraine.
According to Reuters, the chief Finnish diplomat supported Ukraine's membership in NATO and expressed hope that it would happen “not in the very long term.”
Valtonen recalled that three years ago, few people thought that Finland and Sweden will join the Alliance, but this is already a fact. Therefore, Ukraine should also strive for full membership, because “no one knows what and when might happen.”
The Finnish Foreign Ministry supports the call of the elected US President Donald Trump to increase defense spending from 2% to 5% of GDP for each NATO member. Valtonen believes that Europe can do more for its security.
During his press conference, Trump spoke negatively about Ukraine's membership in NATO, saying that he “can understand the feeling” of dictator Putin regarding the unwillingness to see our country in the Alliance.
