BBC: North Korean troops in the Kursk region lost about a thousand people killed

Illustrative photo in mid-January, the DPRK troops lost 4 thousand people. Of these, about a thousand were killed.

This was reported by the BBC, citing data from Western officials.

BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner believes that this is a very high figure, since about 11,000 North Korean troops were sent to help Russia in the Kursk region.

In his opinion, such a level of losses is unacceptable for the North Korean contingent without significant reinforcements.

It is currently unclear where the wounded are being treated, and when and to what extent they will be replaced.

  • On January 11, it became known that Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region captured two North Korean soldiers. They were taken to Kyiv, and SBU investigators are communicating with them.

  • One of the foreigners had a Russian military ID card issued in the name of another person with registration in the Republic of Tuva of the Russian Federation. And the other had no documents at all.

  • Afterwards, Vladimir Zelensky said that Ukraine is ready to hand over its prisoners to North Korea if the country's leader Kim Jong-un can organize their exchange for Ukrainian soldiers who are being held captive in Russia.

  • The South Korean government plans to hold consultations with Ukraine on the return of captured North Korean soldiers if they request extradition.
