The US temporarily blocks programs for accepting migrants, including Ukrainians

The US administration under Donald Trump has suspended several programs that allowed migrants to temporarily stay in the country. According to reports, the Department of Homeland Security has sent an instruction to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, which provides for the immediate cessation of decisions on applications for participation in these programs. The list of these initiatives includes, in particular, the “Unity for Ukraine” program, which allowed Ukrainians to enter the US with the support of financial sponsors. According to official data, as of September 2023, more than 150 thousand Ukrainians had entered the country under this program.

IZ writes about this with reference to NYT.

Other programs suspended include initiatives that supported the resettlement of migrants from countries with unstable situations, such as Cuba, Haiti, Venezuela and Nicaragua. For example, one program allowed more than 500,000 people to enter the United States with the support of sponsors. The use of the CBP One application, which previously allowed migrants to be processed at border crossings, has also been canceled. At the same time, decisions on applications for family reunification programs and support for minors from Central America are temporarily suspended.

Trump administration officials said that many of these programs allegedly contradict US law. Donald Trump signed an order requiring the Department of Homeland Security to review all programs that do not comply with his executive orders. Officials noted that some initiatives may be permanently canceled after the review is completed. The administration's decision will affect people fleeing regions with critical humanitarian situations.

The suspension of these programs was part of a broader review of humanitarian immigration policy in the United States. Officials say further changes will depend on the analysis of each program. However, the move has already limited the options for many who seek temporary refuge in the country due to wars, political conflicts or economic crises in their countries.
