Conversations in dreams: how and why it happens

Sleep talking, known as somniloquy, is a form of abnormal behavior that occurs during sleep. According to research, about 66% of people have encountered this phenomenon at least once in their lives, although most of them are not aware of it when they wake up, writes IZ with reference to the Obozrevatel material. Most often, such conversations are short-lived and do not have a significant impact on the quality of sleep. However, somniloquy may reflect certain internal brain processes that remain unknown until now.

Sleep talking can occur during both slow and REM sleep, which distinguishes them from most other sleep disorders. Often, these episodes are accompanied by negative emotions. In some cases, they may be associated with dreams, but most often they have no clear connection to real events or previous conversations. Scientists also note a genetic influence: people with a family history of somniloquy are more prone to this condition.

Studies show that sleep talking occurs more often in people who have experienced stressful situations or suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. However, most cases are not associated with mental illness. Experts emphasize that somniloquy is safe if it does not interfere with the person or others. At the same time, it may be a signal to seek medical attention in the event of frequent or disturbing episodes.

To reduce the frequency of sleep talking, it is recommended to improve the quality of sleep with the help of a proper regimen. This includes avoiding caffeine, maintaining a stable sleep schedule, creating a comfortable environment, and reducing the use of electronic devices before bedtime. If somniloquy causes significant inconvenience, experts advise contacting a therapist for a more detailed analysis of the condition.
