How social media affects our mood: new study

Social networks have become an integral part of modern life, but their impact on emotional state remains a subject of active discussion. As IZ reports with reference to Psychology today, a new study published in JAMA Network Open showed that frequent use of platforms is associated with increased levels of irritability. This is especially true for people who actively publish posts or participate in discussions, including on political topics.

The study found that the more time a person spends on social networks, the more often they experience emotional tension. The strongest effect was observed among those who were online most of the day. Scientists note that active discussions, including political ones, are more associated with irritability than passive consumption of content. This is due to the emotional tension caused by conflicting opinions and discussions.

However, social media can also have a positive impact, especially for people who seek support in communities of interest. Virtual fans, for example, find like-minded people, which helps reduce stress levels and creates a sense of belonging. However, it is important to understand that excessive immersion in such communities without a reasonable approach can cause emotional exhaustion.

Experts advise limiting the time spent on social media and avoiding frequent discussions of controversial topics. Approaching the use of platforms as planned leisure can help reduce the negative impact. Setting time limits and being conscious of content allow you to maintain the benefits of social media while minimizing their impact on mood.

Recall that earlier we wrote about three effective techniques that will help minimize addiction to social media.
