On January 28, the church calendar honors the memory of Saint Ephraim the Syrian, writes IZ. Born in Nisybia, he later moved to Edessa, where he became a famous monk and ascetic. He dedicated his life to prayer, fasting, and writing spiritual works that have survived to this day. He actively opposed the heretical movements of his time and left a noticeable mark on church literature. His works became part of church services in many countries.
In folk tradition, on this day, it was customary to observe nature. If the forest became darker, they waited for a thaw. The low flight of birds foreshadowed a strong cold snap, and a sudden wind was considered a sign of a rainy summer to come. At night, housewives left food on the table for the brownie to attract positive energy to the home.
On this day, it is not recommended to clean the house or do household chores. It is also forbidden to swear or use harsh words. Observing these prohibitions, as our ancestors believed, helped to avoid troubles and attract prosperity.
January 28 is also celebrated as the Day of Approval of the National Flag of Ukraine, which became a symbol of the struggle for independence. In addition, it is the International Day for Reducing CO2 Emissions, which reminds us of the importance of preserving the environment and combating climate change.
