Ukrainian Holocaust survivor speaks before German parliament

Roman Shvartsman

Ukrainian Roman Shvartsman, who survived the Holocaust 80 years ago, addressed members of the German Bundestag with an appeal to prevent a new genocide that Russia is committing against Ukraine.

According to The Guardian, the 88-year-old man told politicians at a meeting dedicated to Holocaust Remembrance Day that “Hitler wanted to kill me because I am a Jew, and Putin wants to kill because I am Ukrainian.” In December 2023, a missile hit his home in Odessa, destroying all the property in the apartment.

Mr. Roman also said that “I was once able to avoid extermination, and now, as an old man, I am forced to live again with the fear that my children and grandchildren will become victims of a war of extermination.”

  • The Bundestag Budget Committee supported the provision of additional military aid to Ukraine in the amount of 3 billion euros.
