How war affects the mental health of Ukrainian schoolchildren: UNESCO study

As reported by the New Ukrainian School, the international organization UNESCO conducted a study that examined how war affects the mental health of Ukrainian teenagers. More than 100 schoolchildren from different regions of Ukraine participated in it, who conducted a survey among their peers. The goal was to find out what values and life meanings are most important for young people in wartime. As a result, it was determined that most teenagers note the importance of social support and a sense of care from their surroundings, writes IZ.

The study participants conducted surveys in their educational institutions and neighboring schools. In total, more than 23 thousand students participated in the project. The results showed that 95% of those surveyed have people who care about them, which indicates a high level of social interaction among Ukrainian youth. However, only half of schoolchildren pay sufficient attention to their mental health. Those who belong to vulnerable categories are the least likely to seek help: students with disabilities, internally displaced persons, and representatives of low-income families.

The Ministry of Education of Ukraine is involved in supporting the psychological health of schoolchildren, implementing additional programs to train specialists in this area. As of 2025, about 20,400 psychologists work in schools, which is 83% of the required number. Also, more than 73 thousand teachers have already undergone special training in providing psychological first aid during war. These measures are aimed at creating a safe environment for children experiencing the consequences of military events.

Research will continue to find new ways to support schoolchildren in difficult conditions. One of the areas of work will be to provide young people with additional knowledge about psychological health and involve them in the process of making important decisions in communities. Experts emphasize the need to create educational initiatives that will help schoolchildren cope with stress and feel more confident in the future.
