On February 1, believers commemorate the holy martyr Tryphon, who lived in the 3rd century and was known for his gift of healing and casting out evil spirits, writes IZ. According to legend, he helped people selflessly, strengthening their faith in Jesus Christ. One of his most famous miracles was the expulsion of a demon from the daughter of the Roman emperor Gordian III, which confirmed his divine gift. After Emperor Decius came to power, Christians began to be persecuted, and Tryphon was captured. He was subjected to cruel torture and executed, and before his death he begged God to grant help to those who would turn to him with prayer.
Today is also of special significance as the eve of the great Christian holiday – the Meeting of the Lord. On this day, services are held in churches, during which Saint Tryphon is remembered and preparations are made for tomorrow’s holiday. Since ancient times, people have called this date Tryphon’s Day and believed that it symbolizes the border between winter and spring. That is why numerous weather signs are associated with February 1. If the day turned out to be quiet and sunny, then spring will come early and will be warm. If it snows, then spring will be rainy, and evening fog indicates a warming the next day.
The Church calls on February 1 to observe spiritual purity, avoid quarrels, bad thoughts and slander. You should also not show envy, laziness and anger, as this is considered a bad sign. In the people, this day is associated with the prohibition of buying knives and leaving money on the table, which could lead to financial losses. In addition, it is believed that today you should not think evil of others, as this can bring bad luck. At the same time, believers are advised not to be sad and not to complain about life, as this can cause long-term difficulties.
Traditionally, Saint Tryphon is asked for protection of the family, preservation of the harvest from pests, healing from diseases and a successful marriage. Since February is considered the month of weddings, this day was considered favorable for engagement and marriage. There was a sign that couples who promise each other loyalty today will be together for life. In ancient times, special candles were made on this day, which were consecrated in the church on the Day of the Meeting and kept at home as a talisman.
