The leaders of the European Union and Great Britain agreed to increase spending and eliminate shortcomings in their defense system against Russia and other threats at a security summit in Brussels.

As Reuters writes, European Council President Antonio Costa, who initiated the meeting, said there was a need to “do better, stronger and faster than what has already been done for the sake of security, and most importantly – together.”

According to the official, the leaders of the EU member states and the United Kingdom focused on resolving problems in the defense sector during the meeting – in particular, regarding air and missile defense, missile weapons, ammunition and military transport.

Despite a common understanding of the need to increase military spending, the summit participants were unable to come to a common answer on the question of where to get the funds for additional funding. The European Commission promised to review the rules on restrictions on member states' public finances in order to make it easier to increase defense budgets.

  • The summit took place against the backdrop of Donald Trump's statement that the United States will “definitely” impose tariffs on EU goods.
