Sergeyevich or Sergievich? How to write in Ukrainian properly

name ’ I am an important part of the official address in Ukrainian. It is formed on the name of the father with the addition of suffixes -evich/-evich for men and -vna/-vna for women, writes the site of industrial Zaporozhye. However, some names may cause difficulties in writing, and one of them is derived from Sergei . You can often find two options- Sergievich and Sergievich , but which one is correct? /H3>

According to the current Ukrainian spelling and official rules of patronymic names, the right option is Sergiyovych .

  • if the father's name ends on -y , like Andriy, Sergey, Timothy , then the -yovych (for men) or -evna (for women) is added to the base. The name of the father ends on the consonant, the -ovych/-vna or -evich/-ivna (depending on the accent and traditional use) is added.
  • . >

Therefore, on behalf of Sergei , only one correct option is formed – Sergiyevich (for men) and Sergiyevna (for women).

    Examples of proper use:

    • “Let me introduce you Ivan Petrov, our new leader.”
    • “Marina Sergeevna heads the marketing department for over three years.” Heading “> Why” Sergiyevich “is a false option?

Option Sergiyevich does not meet the norms of modern Ukrainian. Its use can be caused by the following factors:

      1. the influence of Russian -in Russian, only “Sergeyevich” is used in Russian, which in the case Mechanical transfer to the Ukrainian language can cause confusion.
      2. improper reconciliation with the base of the name – some mistakenly believe that “Sergiyevich” sounds more natural because of the softness of the name “Sergei”, but but This is contrary to the rules of word formation.
      3. Incorrect analogy with other names -for example, derivatives from the names Eugene, Alexei, George form the patronymic with the suffix -evich (Yevgenovich, Alekseevich, Georgievich), however) Im ’ I Sergey subordinate to another grammatical model.
      4. ❌ “Mr. Sergiyevich, can you comment on the situation?”

The right examples will be the right options Sergievich and Sergiyevna respectively. By patronymic

To avoid such difficulties, it is worth remembering the right forms for some names:

        • on behalf of Andrew < /Strong>– Andreevich / Andreevna
          • “The project is overseen by Vitaliy Andriyovich.”
        • On behalf of Alexei Oleksiyovych / Alekseevna
          • “Natalia is always responsible for work.”
        • on behalf of Timothy Timofeyevich /</< Strong> Timofeevna
