Ukrainian students are lagging behind in war: what is known about the situation in education

Education in Ukraine has undergone significant changes due to war lasting for the third year. Many students are forced to study online or in temporary shelters because of constant danger. Classes are interrupted by air anxiety, and the social skills of children are deteriorating due to limited interaction with peers, writes IZ with reference to the New York Times. Distance learning has become a reality for most Ukrainian students, but not everyone has equal access to quality education.

The partial online education, which has been introduced by schools, makes children adapt to a new format. In safer regions, students can visit educational institutions several times a week, while in the frontier areas of study occurs in bomb shelters. According to the Ministry of Education, 137 underground schools have already been established in Ukraine, where children can study in more protected conditions. At the same time, about 14% of students receive education completely remotely, including 300,000 children who have gone abroad.

children left in the occupied territories are at risk because of the desire to study under the Ukrainian program. The occupying power forces students to attend Russian schools and to accept another's curriculum. Parents often hide the fact of study in remote Ukrainian classes, as it can have serious consequences. Meanwhile, Ukrainian students are faced with other challenges: they are studying in local schools and are trying to keep in touch with the Ukrainian program in parallel. Many families who have gone abroad have adapted to a new life and may not return to Ukraine. Experts say that even a significant increase in fertility will not be able to compensate for the losses of the population. Migrants may be solving the problem, but this process requires a comprehensive approach and a long -term strategy.
