February 25 – What is the holiday today and what is important to know about this day

February 25 Orthodox honor the memory of St. Tarasia, Archbishop. He lived in the VIII century and played a key role in restoring honoring icons after the iconoclastic period. In 784, Tarasius was appointed Patriarch of Constantinople and became the main organizer of the seventh Ecumenical Cathedral of 787, who officially restored icon worship. The saint died on February 25, 806. People were called “Taras Besson” and believed that if you do not go to bed until sunset, you can avoid misfortune. Also, people on this day were engaged in charity and prayed for the health of their relatives.

In Ukraine, February 25 celebrates the Day of Engineering and Aviation Service of the Armed Forces. It is a professional holiday for those who provide technical serviceability and serve military aircraft. Without their coordinated work, it is impossible to function combat aviation. This day is a recognition of their devotion and professionalism. In addition, today in the world is celebrated the day of sterilization of animals. The initiative was started in 1995 in order to draw attention to humane reduction of the number of stray animals by sterilization.

There are several folk signs on this day, which were predicted by the weather. If there was a warm day on February 25, then the summer promised to be the same. The roar of thunder heralded the cold, and the rooks that began to build nests pointed to rapid warming. If the crows shouted loudly, then the rains and cold should be expected in the summer.

Our ancestors believed that any action on this day could affect the future, so they tried to follow certain prohibitions, in particular not to look into the windows of other people's homes and not to drink alcohol.

25 February were born outstanding personalities, including the Ukrainian director and reformer of Les Kurbas theater, choreographer and the founder of the dance ensemble Pavel Virsky, as well as Monumentalist Artist Volodymyr Melnichenko.

In history, this date was distinguished by several important events. In particular, in 1573 Ivan Fedorovich founded the first printing house in Lviv, in 1791 the US Congress approved the creation of the first bank of the country, and in 1918 the Gregorian calendar was introduced in Ukraine. Also on this day in 2010, President Viktor Yanukovych's inauguration took place, which was deprived of the rank in 2014 after the Dignity Revolution.
