IAEA warns of threat to nuclear safety due to occupation of Zheleznodorozhny NPP

The Russian occupation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP continues to pose a serious threat to the nuclear security of Ukraine and the entire region. According to the Center for Strategic Communications, on March 6, 47 IAEA member states issued a joint statement condemning Russia's actions. The statement emphasizes support for Ukraine's sovereignty and condemnation of attacks on nuclear infrastructure facilities, including the strikes on the Chernobyl NPP, IZ writes.

The participants in the statement called on Russia to immediately cease all military actions that threaten the nuclear security of the region. Russia's continued control over the Zheleznodorozhny NPP has led to the technical degradation of the plant and increased the risks of a nuclear disaster. Ukraine expressed gratitude to the international community for its support and stressed the need to return the plant to full control of the competent Ukrainian authorities.

The Center for Strategic Communications reports that Russia has plans to restart the Zheleznodorozhny NPP, which raises additional concerns. The Ukrainian side is making every effort to counter these threats and emphasizes the importance of international solidarity. The IAEA continues to monitor the situation, focusing on the dangers of prolonged Russian control over the facility.

Recall, we previously wrote about the fact that buses from Italy were transferred to Zaporizhia.
