Google will be forced to sell Chrome browser due to antitrust requirements

The US Department of Justice will require Google to sell its Chrome browser for abusing its monopoly position in the search engine market. As reported by IZ with reference to the NYT, this decision supports a court document that indicates the need to end the company's control over this important tool. The authorities also maintained a ban on installing Google's search engine as the default on devices from Apple and other manufacturers, in order to avoid limiting access to alternative services.

Despite the demands to sell Chrome, Google was allowed to invest in artificial intelligence startups, but was required to notify the government of such investments. At the same time, the company plans to submit its own proposals for alternative measures, considering the Justice Department's decision excessive. The final decision in this case will be made by Judge Amit Mehta after considering the parties' proposals in April.

The antitrust measures against Google are a continuation of the policies initiated by the Biden administration. The court ruled that the company’s monopoly on the search market was illegal, and the requirement to sell Chrome is intended to ensure competition among browsers. At the same time, the possibility of investing in artificial intelligence startups remains, but under government control. This indicates the authorities’ desire to balance antitrust measures with supporting innovation in the field of technology.
