The final communiqué of the G7 foreign ministers meeting did not include new sanctions against Russia. As reported by IZ with reference to Reuters, at the same time, representatives of the countries emphasized the need for security guarantees for Ukraine. The US insisted on tougher wording regarding China and refused to support the declaration regarding the Russian “shadow fleet”.
The discussions within the framework of the meeting took place in La Malbaie, Canada, and lasted several hours. Although the adoption of the communiqué was not easy, the parties reached consensus on the main issues. EU representatives expressed optimism about maintaining the positive dynamics in relations between the G7 countries and Ukraine.
The American delegation insisted on “red lines” regarding Ukraine, and also focused on threats from China. In addition, the US blocked an attempt to adopt a separate document on deterring Russia’s “shadow fleet,” which numbers about 1,000 vessels and circumvents international sanctions.
