March 22, according to the new church calendar, marks the memory of the holy martyr Basil of Ankir, a presbyter. Celebrating March 22 in a new style

This day commemorates the holy martyr Basil of Ancyra, who lived in the 4th century in Galatia (Asia Minor). At first he worked as a doctor, but later became a priest and bishop. Basil fought against the Arian heresy, which denied the divinity of Christ. Because of this, Emperor Julian, also known as the Apostate, deprived him of his rank. However, Basil was restored to power after the Orthodox Council. As a result of defending his faith, he was tortured and died, remaining true to his beliefs to the end.

Holiday on March 22, old style

According to the Julian calendar, this is the day of remembrance of the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste. As in the new style, March 22 is a parental memorial Saturday, during which believers pray for the repose of the souls of the deceased.

Signs of March 22

In Ukraine, this day is also known as Vasyl Tepliy, and folk signs are associated with weather forecasts and the upcoming harvest:

  • If the sun at dawn has red circles, expect a good harvest.
  • If crows bathe, it will be warm.
  • Small clouds in the sky promise worsening weather.
  • If it is warm on March 22, it is a signal that starlings will arrive soon.
  • In addition, a flower blooming in the house on this day is considered a good sign.

Prohibitions for March 22

On the church holiday of March 22, believers should not swear, envy, gossip or boast. It is worth avoiding lies, laziness and greed. It is important to remember that on Father's Saturday one should not commemorate the dead with alcohol or lean dishes, and one should not be excessively sad or show despondency.

Allowed actions on March 22

On this day, people pray for the soul and healing from serious illnesses, ask for peace and strengthening of faith. Those who are fasting are allowed to eat dishes with oil. The Church advises on this day to visit the temple and pray for the dead, as well as to join in traditional rituals, such as baking kalachiky, which symbolize the sun.
