US suspends processing of green card applications for refugees

The administration of US President Donald Trump has temporarily suspended the processing of applications for green cards from certain categories of people, including refugees, as part of a broader initiative to strengthen the vetting of immigrants. According to CBS News, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has ordered a halt to the processing of applications for permanent legal status from people who have been granted refugee status or asylum in the country, writes IZ.

The move is part of the Trump administration's efforts to improve national security and combat potential fraud in the immigration process. Refugees and asylum seekers in the United States undergo rigorous vetting, including medical exams, interviews and security checks that can take years.

The US Department of Homeland Security confirmed this information, saying that the halt to the process is necessary to implement two executive orders by President Trump. One of the executive orders calls into question the immigration vetting procedures introduced by the Joe Biden administration, while the other allows the State Department to designate Mexican cartels and gangs, such as Tren de Aragua, as foreign terrorist organizations.

The latest initiative is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to restrict, tighten and in some cases suspend legal immigration due to national security and fraud concerns. It follows a decision to suspend all immigration applications from Latin American and Ukrainian nationals admitted to the United States under humanitarian programs.
