American officials have faced unexpected resistance in preparing for a visit by the US second lady, Usa Vance, to Greenland. They have been going door-to-door in the capital, Nuuk, looking for locals who would accept her, but have been turned away everywhere. Danish TV 2 journalist Jesper Steinmetz said: “The American magic mission has failed. They have realised that the Greenlanders do not want visitors now.” This is reported by IZ with reference to The Independent.
Additionally, the Nuuk-based tour company Tupilak Travel, which had initially agreed to host Usha Vance, withdrew its invitation, saying it did not want to be part of the “subordinate agenda” and media spectacle associated with the visit. They emphasized, “No, thank you for the nice visit… Greenland belongs to Greenlanders.”
The developments come amid growing tensions between the United States and Greenland. President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to purchase or annex Greenland, which has angered locals and Danish authorities. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the US actions “unacceptable pressure” on Greenland and Denmark.
Given these circumstances, Usha Vance's visit has been shortened to just a visit to the US military base in Pituffik, underscoring the complexity of US-Greenland relations and the reluctance of local residents to participate in activities they see as part of political pressure.
It was previously reported that the Kremlin is preparing an army of 1.5 million and deploying military equipment near NATO borders.
