The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has created a new structure — the Space Policy Department. This was announced by Deputy Defense Minister Kateryna Chernogorenko during a speech at the Space For Ukraine forum, which took place on March 30. According to her, the main goal is to unite the efforts of state and private players in the space sector for effective cooperation with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, IZ writes.
The department will work on the implementation of space solutions in the military sphere, the creation of satellites and the development of warning systems. ” We have a law on space activities, which says that the Ministry of Defense must form a policy in the field of military space. This is not only the purchase of innovative solutions from engineers… but also the creation of space troops ,” Chernogorenko noted.
The new department will also serve as a coordination center. It should become a place where the best ideas will be gathered and state initiatives in the space sector will be formed. ” We want all innovators, all engineers who are thinking about how to develop space technologies to know the contacts, understand the digital entry points to interact with us ,” the official explained.
According to the plan of the Ministry of Defense, this department will be the main customer of space technology, services and products in Ukraine. It will coordinate the interaction between scientific institutes, commercial companies and defense forces. Among the key tasks is also the preparation of the infrastructure for launching its own satellites by 2030.
Earlier, in January 2021, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the concept of the scientific and technical space program of Ukraine until 2025. Within its framework, it was planned to create about two thousand jobs in the space industry, as well as increase the number of specialists in this field.
