Palm Sunday traditions in Spain
Each region of the country has preserved its own customs, but everywhere Palm Sunday is a solemn holiday with a lot of symbolism and beliefs:
- The blessing of palm branches (palmas) is a symbol of victory and peace. In coastal regions, instead of willow, as in Ukraine, palm leaves are used. They are consecrated in the church and then decorated with houses.
- Brotherhood processions (cofradías) – parish communities organize festive processions where figures of Jesus are carried on a donkey, and children dressed in white tunics wave palm branches.
- Gifts for Godchildren – Traditionally, godparents give decorated palm branches and sweets to their godsons.
How it is celebrated in different cities in Spain
Seville is famous for its special solemnity. Here, brotherhoods bring out holy images on wooden platforms with fresh flowers, accompanied by an orchestra and hundreds of parishioners.
Children's processions are popular in Murcia , where the youngest carry small palm branches and poems dedicated to Christ.
In Barcelona, the blessing of palm branches is accompanied by a church choir concert and family dinners.
