Although the British do not have a public holiday on Palm Sunday, churches in England hold solemn services during which parishioners are given palm crosses – a symbol of peace, victory and spiritual hope. In towns and villages, processions are often organized in which believers, singing hymns, walk with palm branches or their substitutes – branches of yew or boxwood, since palms do not grow naturally in Great Britain.

1. Palm crosses. These small crosses made of palm leaves are kept at home by believers until the following year, when they are burned to prepare ashes for Ash Wednesday.
2. Blessing of Children. In many Anglican churches, children are especially welcomed and blessed on Palm Sunday.
3. Decorations in churches. Churches are decorated with greenery, palm leaf crosses, and spring flowers.
4. Family prayers. In some families, it is customary to gather for joint prayer and read the Gospel of Matthew or John.

Ukrainians traditionally sanctify the willow tree — the first symbol of spring. In Britain, there is no custom to “beat” each other with a willow tree with the words “ I don’t beat — the willow tree beats… ”. Here, the emphasis is on church service, peace, and the symbolism of the palm cross. Nevertheless, the Ukrainian diaspora in Great Britain maintains its traditions: they buy or collect willow branches, sanctify them in the churches of the UGCC or OCU, and organize family feasts.
