The European Commission has officially confirmed that a decision has not yet been made on the extension of the temporary protection status for Ukrainian citizens after March 6, 2026. At the same time, Brussels has announced its readiness to consider other options for legalizing Ukrainians in EU member states after the current status expires, IZ writes.
This was announced by European Commission spokesman Markus Lammert at a briefing on April 7, answering journalists' questions. As reported by “European Pravda”, he noted that the current extension of temporary protection until March 2026 provides predictability for Ukrainians and the governments of the member states, but further decisions will be made with the participation of Ukraine.
” Last year, we extended the temporary protection until March 2026. This extension provides predictability and legal certainty for both Ukrainians and Member States. We will now need to consider together with Ukraine possible options and steps for the future. We will cooperate with the Ukrainian authorities and the authorities of the EU Member States in their choices ,” said Lammert.
According to the spokesperson, the European Commission is currently assessing various scenarios, which could include both the possibility of extending temporary protection and transitioning to other forms of legal stay – through employment, study or family circumstances. The option of supporting citizens who decide to return to Ukraine is also being considered.
” We are considering various options, including whether or not to extend temporary protection, depending on the development of events – transition to (other) national statuses through work, study or family circumstances, as well as support for those returning home to Ukraine ,” he added.
Separately, a representative of the European Commission emphasized that the decision should be made at the European level, taking into account the impact on the national systems of member states.
” A common European solution is needed that will ensure predictability, stability and a more balanced impact on the systems of EU member states ,” Lammert said.
He stressed that the European Union will continue to stand by Ukrainians forced to leave their homes due to the war. According to the spokesman, the activation of the Temporary Protection Directive has allowed more than 4.5 million Ukrainians to find safety, refuge and new opportunities in EU countries.
” The EU remains committed to providing support to those fleeing Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine ,” concluded Markus Lammert.
