Russian President Vladimir Putin used his talks with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico to present an appearance of readiness for minor concessions toward the United States, while continuing to reject Washington’s main demands and blaming both the U.S. and Europe for provoking Russian aggression, reports the Baltimore Chronicle citing the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

During the meeting in Beijing on September 2, Putin claimed that Russia had never opposed Ukraine’s potential accession to the European Union, but strongly objected to Kyiv joining NATO. He repeated his narrative about a so-called “coup” in 2014, which he alleged triggered Russia’s invasions of Ukraine in 2014 and 2022. At the same time, Putin denied that Russia has any future plans to attack other European countries.

Additionally, the Russian leader stated that Moscow might consider the joint operation of the occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant together with the U.S. and Ukraine in the future, but only under what he called “favorable conditions.”
