One such morning ritual that is worth reconsidering is skipping breakfast. Research shows that those who prefer a hearty morning meal burn almost twice as many calories throughout the day.
Moreover, breakfast lovers have lower blood sugar and insulin levels, which significantly reduces the risk of obesity. And obesity can shorten life by as much as 14 years, according to the US National Institute of Health.
Skipping breakfast is also associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown that those who regularly ignore the morning meal have an 87% increased risk of dying from heart disease.
Equally alarming are the findings regarding processed meats like bacon. According to a large five-year study, eating just one slice of bacon (about 25 grams) a day increases the risk of developing colorectal cancer by 20%. And yet, the survival rate for patients with this type of cancer after diagnosis is only 37% in the first five years.
Another dangerous morning habit is choosing the wrong juice. For example, increasing your fruit juice intake by just half a cup a day can increase your risk of developing diabetes by 16%. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of early death.
In addition, grapefruit juice fans should remember that its use is strictly not recommended to be combined with a number of medications, in particular those that lower cholesterol or blood pressure.
Instead of unwittingly harming your health, it is better to think about how you can improve your morning habits. Choosing healthier alternatives can not only prolong life, but also significantly improve its quality.
