The American publication Politico writes that the party of newly elected German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the Christian Social Democrats (CSD), and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) have agreed to demand that the European Union suspend funding and voting rights in the EU Council for member countries that violate the key principles of the organization, NBN reports.

The draft coalition resolution of German politicians does not specifically mention Hungary, but journalists are convinced that it is precisely about it. The “worst offender in the European Union” has been repeatedly accused of destroying democratic norms, curtailing media freedom and limiting the independence of judges.

Let us recall that in 2018, the European Union launched the first stage of the Article 7 procedure against Hungary, suspecting the country of violating the EU's fundamental values and rights. This process was later stopped due to political disagreements among member states. In 2022, the European Commission blocked 22 billion euros for Budapest.

As reported, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky called on the European Union to deal with Hungary's blocking of decisions.
