The American edition of The New York Times published material dedicated to Ukrainian women who, in the hour of a full-scale war, took up an important profession – work in the mines. Journalists have recently visited the mines of Ukrainian companies Metinvest and DTEK to provide more detailed information about this new phenomenon, write WomanEL.
Following the publication, from the beginning of the war, 130 women began to work underground in a mine in Pavlograd, Dnipropetrovsk region. They take on the role of inspectors of safety equipment on conveyors that bring coal to the surface, as well as supervise trains that move between different sections of the mine.
Sergey Pharaonov, the deputy director of the DTEK mine, noted that the role of wives in this situation is even more important. About 1 thousand mine workers have been mobilized, which accounts for approximately one-fifth of the total personnel. To fill this deficit, the mine hired 330 women.

The editors of The New York Times noted that this trend reflects a foreign Ukrainian phenomenon. Through changes in the number of human workers, women are more likely to occupy traditionally human professions. They become the drivers of vans and buses, the welders in metallurgical plants and the cleaners in warehouses. Thousands of women also voluntarily joined the army. Talking about their choice to work in the mine in Pokrovska, which belongs to the Metinvest group, the women say that “the company promoted stable work in the minds of the war-torn economy.” Companies are also making efforts to get more women into the market through initial programs. At the beginning of 2024, the mine in Pokrovska launched a program that allowed 32 women to start working under the ground.
