Why Duolingo users are learning Chinese in droves

After the announcement of the upcoming ban on TikTok in the US, the number of users learning Mandarin dialect on Duolingo increased by 216% between December 2024 and January 2025, WomanEL learned.

The growth is attributed to the migration of more than 700 thousand American TikTok users to the Chinese analogue RedNote. To better adapt in the new environment, they decide to master the Chinese language, writes The Verge.

The ban on TikTok is planned from January 19, 2025, unless the Supreme Court intervenes. However, President-elect Donald Trump is considering signing an executive order to delay this decision for a few months.

Currently, American users are actively preparing for the changes, and Duolingo will benefit from this with new language enthusiasts.
