History of Mother's Day
The tradition of honoring mothers has been around for centuries, but the modern version of Mother's Day originated in the United States.
In the 1900s, a woman named Anna Jarvis wanted to create a special day to honor mothers because she admired how much they did for their children. She enlisted the help of a man named John Wanamaker, and in 1908 they held the first official Mother's Day celebration at a church in West Virginia. That same day, many people came to a Mother's Day event at one of Wanamaker's stores in Philadelphia.
After that, Jarvis really wanted to make Mother's Day a big event across the country. She believed that other holidays were more about male achievements, so she wrote letters to newspapers and important people to make Mother's Day an official holiday.
By 1912, many states, cities, and churches had begun celebrating Mother’s Day every year. Jarvis even started a group called the International Mother’s Day Association to help spread the word. Eventually, in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May to be the official Mother’s Day, writes Bloomandwild. Incidentally, Jarvis later denounced the commercialization of the holiday and spent the rest of her life trying to have it removed from the calendar.
