Water has long symbolized what lies beneath the surface, especially when it comes to feelings. If you follow astrology, this is why it is believed that water signs of the Zodiac are particularly good at feeling their inner world and emotions. These themes and connections are also carried over to our dreams. WomanEL will share all the interpretations.

Dreams about water are not inherently “good” or “bad,” says astrologer and dream interpreter Stephanie Gayling. It's one of the most common dreams, simply because water can appear in dreams in a variety of forms. And where and how it appears is an integral part of its meaning.

What does water dream about: general meaning and interpretation

Understanding how water made you feel in your dream is a key way to understand its meaning. “Water is so meaningful and primal. And there are so many ways that water can show up in your dreams. So you can sort them into two categories,” says Geiling. “Ask yourself, is the water life-affirming or life-threatening?” Dream interpreter Laurie Lowenberg adds that how you feel and what you do in the water “has a huge impact on the meaning of the dream.

Are you in a body of water having a great time, like swimming at the beach with friends, at a pool party, or in a hot tub? According to Geiling, this means that your relationships and emotions are in harmony and you feel completely secure in your social connections. Swimming or diving into the ocean or lake indicates calm and serenity, Geiling and Lowenberg say.

A soothing shower or waterfall with soft water can symbolize completion and purification. “It’s a good sign that you’re making progress in whatever you’re doing. Whether it’s a natural overcoming of something or an active work of cleansing yourself of something upsetting or negative,” says Lowenberg. On the other hand, a dream about heavy rain usually symbolizes tears and sadness. “Think about something going on in your real life that’s tearing you apart,” Lowenberg adds.

Dreams about water that feel very dangerous to your life indicate emotions and forces that you can’t control. For example, a dream about drowning. This is a signal that there is something in your life that is either overwhelming you or threatening you, says Lowenberg. “When you’re drowning, you’re trying to stay on your feet, and something is pulling you down. So when you do this action, ask yourself what it represents? What in your real life is making you struggle or stay on your feet emotionally?” she asks.

What else does water mean in a dream? Lowenberg says that a dream about a flood symbolizes a situation that is getting worse and worse, and that your emotions are building up to the point where they threaten to cascade down on you. Is something leaking in your dream? Geiling says that this is a sign that your boundaries are not being maintained and that “your emotional scaffolding is not strong enough.”

Both Geiling and Loewenberg say that when it comes to interpreting a dream, it's important to consider the context of the events that occur in it and how you feel upon waking. Did you feel fear or anxiety about the presence of water in your dream? It's a cue to look back at your life and see how you can connect the dots with an event or object in your present that evokes similar emotions.

Calm water usually signifies peace for most people (although it can be unsettling for some). Boiling or hot water can signal a situation that is coming to the surface, or that you are in trouble or about to get into trouble. Is the water cloudy? This can indicate something unclear or negative. Clear or sparkling water has a more positive meaning and can symbolize peace or harmony.

Pay attention to whether you have recurring dreams involving water. If water appears in your dream several times, it is a sign that whatever it symbolizes is still present, relevant, and needs to be resolved quickly. A more positive recurring connotation signals something good or working.

Lowenberg says it's best to view dreams as honest reflections of what's going on in your waking life. And to heed their warnings accordingly. Once you understand the possible meaning or symbolism of the dream, spend some time resolving or grappling with what you dreamed.

Because water is so connected to emotions, it's important to take a close and honest look at how you handle your emotions and how they guide your thoughts and actions. “Is water overwhelming or threatening? That means your emotional thinking is somehow getting you into trouble in real life, so it's time to take the emotion out of the situation and act rationally and logically,” says Lowenberg. “Is water working for you and making you feel good? Is it cleansing or beautiful? That means the emotional side is working for you.”

A dream journal is a useful way to organize all your thoughts. Write down your thoughts and feelings related to your dreams. And then you can ensure that this healing power mostly manifests itself in your dreams in a positive and favorable way.
