What is a solar eclipse and why is it special?

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, temporarily blocking sunlight. On March 29, there will be a partial eclipse, during which the Moon will only cover a small part of the Sun's disk.

Such eclipses do not occur very often and occur in a certain cycle – Saros, which lasts about 18 years. The last such phenomenon was observed in 2007. For many astronomers, this is a great opportunity to study the effect of an eclipse on the Earth's atmosphere, and for ordinary people – a unique chance to see something truly special.

In which countries will the eclipse be best visible?

The eclipse will be best seen in the northern regions of the Earth. It will cover much of Northern Europe, parts of Eastern Europe, and the North Atlantic Ocean. It will also be visible in some regions of North America, including northeastern Canada.

The highest phase of the eclipse – 93.8% – is expected in Canada, on the Ungava Peninsula. In these places, sunlight will be significantly reduced, creating a twilight effect.

Where in Ukraine can you see a solar eclipse?

The partial solar eclipse on March 29 will be observed mainly in the western and northern regions of Ukraine. The best conditions will be in the Volyn region, where the eclipse will reach 11%. In the Lviv region, this figure will be 6.7%, in Zakarpattia – 6.2%, in Ternopil region – 4%.

In Kyiv, the rare phenomenon will be almost imperceptible – only 0.6%. However, even a slight eclipse is a reason to raise your eyes to the sky and feel involved in grandiose cosmic processes. The best time for observation is from 13:00 to 14:00 Kyiv time.

How to safely observe a unique phenomenon

Observing a solar eclipse can be dangerous to the eyes, so it is important to take safety precautions. Use special darkened glasses or filters to protect your vision. Regular sunglasses are not suitable for this type of observation.

It’s also best to choose an open area without tall buildings and trees to have the best view of the skyline. And don’t forget to check the weather forecast – even a little cloud cover can ruin your experience of this unique phenomenon.
