On August 30, the Orthodox Church commemorates Saints Alexander, John the Faster, and Paul the New. All three served as Patriarchs of Constantinople at different times, each leaving a significant legacy in defending the Christian faith. Believers honor their memory on this date, alongside folk traditions and customs tied to the day, reports the Baltimore Chronicle.

Saint Alexander lived in the 4th century. He served as vicar under the first Patriarch of Constantinople, Metrophanes, and represented him at the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea, where he opposed the Arian heresy. Following Metrophanes’ death, Alexander became Patriarch according to his will. He devoted his life to protecting Christianity from paganism. Chronicles also describe his gift of prayerful power: during a debate with a pagan philosopher, Alexander commanded him to be silent, and the man became mute. Speech returned to him only after he confessed the true God.

John the Faster lived in the 6th century and led an ascetic lifestyle from a young age, which earned him his title. Even as Patriarch, he remained humble and was known for helping the poor. After his death, only a wooden bed and coarse clothing were found among his possessions.

Paul the New, originally from Cyprus, headed the Patriarchal See of Constantinople in the 8th century, during the era of iconoclasm. He sought to restore the veneration of icons but faced strong resistance. Realizing he could no longer protect the Church, he resigned from his position, retired to a monastery, and ended his life in monastic vows.

According to the New Calendar, August 30 is also the day of commemoration for Saint Christopher the Roman, Saint Fantinus the Thaumaturge of Thessalonica, Serbian hierarchs and Patriarch Gregory, Saint Alexander of Svir, and Saint Barlaam, Metropolitan of Moldavia.

In folk tradition, this date is called Alexander’s Day. After a one-day fast, people would prepare festive meals and invite guests. Barley porridge from the new harvest and a ceremonial loaf were essential on the table, along with pies, vegetable, fish, or meat dishes. In prayers on this day, the faithful ask for stronger faith, children’s health, harmony in the family, and childless couples turn to the saints for the blessing of a newborn.
