On September 2, Lviv bid farewell to Andriy Parubiy, former Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada and ex-Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. He was laid to rest at the Lychakiv Cemetery, reports the Baltimore Chronicle.

The requiem service was held at St. George’s Cathedral, where numerous representatives of Ukraine’s political elite and Parubiy’s close allies gathered. The church was filled with people who came to honor the memory of the late statesman and public figure.

Following the ceremony, the funeral cortege moved through the central streets of Lviv toward Lychakiv Cemetery. Many passersby paused along the route to pay their respects to the politician.

At the cemetery, friends and colleagues delivered farewell speeches. Among those who addressed the audience were former President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and ex-Prime Ministers Volodymyr Groysman and Arseniy Yatsenyuk.

In his speech, Petro Poroshenko emphasized that the memory of Andriy Parubiy should serve as a pledge to continue defending Ukraine’s statehood: “Here, beside Andriy, we must promise that we will not allow the destruction of what he lived for — the preservation of our state.”
