For the first time in history, three Ukrainian tennis players have reached the second round of the singles at the Olympic Games.
Ukrainian tennis player Diana Yastremska has had a successful start at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
In the first round of the individual tournament, the 24-year-old native of Odessa defeated Laura Pigossi from Brazil.
The tense three-set match lasted 2 hours and ended with a strong-willed victory for the Ukrainian – 3:6, 7:5, 6:0.
This is the second Olympics in Dayana’s career. At the 2020 Games in Tokyo, she was eliminated in the first round.
In the 1/16 finals, Yastremska will face Colombian Camila Osorio, who knocked out Latvian Jelena Ostapenko (6:4, 6:3) at the start of the Olympic tournament.
Yastremska became the third Ukrainian tennis player to reach the second round of the 2024 Olympics. Earlier, Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk won their opening matches at the Games in Paris.
Another Ukrainian tennis player, Angelina Kalinina, withdrew from the 2024 Olympics due to illness.
