In the 2024 Olympic high jump final, Ukraine was represented by two athletes – Maguchikh and Gerashchenko.
Gerashchenko was the first to complete her performance in the sector, sharing the bronze with Australian Eleanor Patterson – the two of them cleared 1.95 meters, but failed to clear the 1.98 meter bar in three attempts.
Then Maguchikh continued the fight for gold with another Australian, Nicola Olislagers, and became an Olympic champion. Yaroslava cleared 2.00 meters on her first attempt and beat Olislagers in the number of attempts.
Both athletes failed to clear 2.02 meters, then Yaroslava moved the bar to 2.04 meters, but was unable to clear it.
This is the second Olympics in Maguchikh's career, at 22 years old. At the 2020 Games in Tokyo, she won bronze, clearing 2.00 meters in the final.
29-year-old Gerashchenko competed in the Olympic final for the third time and won her first award. Before that, she finished 10th in Rio 2016 and fourth in Tokyo 2020.
Another Ukrainian, Yulia Levchenko, did not compete in the final because she could not overcome the qualification. The Ukrainian failed to clear the starting height of 1.83 meters in three attempts.
At the beginning of July this year, Maguchikh broke the world recordin women's high jump. The athlete from Dnipro was the first in history to clear a height of 2.10 meters at the Diamond League stage in Paris. Yaroslava surpassed the achievement of Bulgarian Stefka Kostadinova, who jumped 2.09 meters at the 1987 World Championships in Rome.
Now Ukraine has five medals at the 2024 Olympics: two gold, one silver and two bronze.
Earlier, Olga Kharlan won bronze in individual sabre, and together with Elena Kravatskaya, Alina Komashchuk and Yulia Bakastova, she won gold in the team. In addition, Serhiy Kulish won silver in shooting.
Another award, at least silver, was guaranteed for Ukraine by Oleksandr Khyzhnyak, who reached the final of the boxing tournament in the weight category up to 80 kg.
