Zhan will not be able to defend the title of the current Olympic champion.
Ukrainian Greco-Roman wrestler Zhan Beleniuk failed to reach the finals at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
In the semifinals, the 33-year-old Ukrainian (weight up to 87 kg) lost to Iranian Alireza Mohmadipiani.
The fight ended with a score of 3:3, but thanks to the last active action, the representative of Iran made it to the final, and Zhan on Thursday, August 8 will compete for the bronze medal.
It should be noted that in the 1/8 finals, Beleniuk defeated Chinese Haitao Qian (7:1), and then in the quarterfinals he defeated Kazakhstani Nursultan Tursinov (7:3).
Thus, Beleniuk resigned as the current Olympic champion. At the 2020 Games in Tokyo, he won gold, and in Rio 2016, he won silver.
Earlier, another Ukrainian Greco-Roman wrestler, Parviz Nasibov, reached the final of the 2024 Olympics.
Also today, August 7, Oksana Livach will compete for bronze in freestyle wrestling. The Ukrainian's opponent in the medal bout will be Japanese Yui Susaki, who is the current Olympic champion. The start is at 22:20 Kyiv time.
Ukraine is represented at the XXXIII Summer Olympics by 140 athletes who compete in 23 sports. Ukrainian athletes have already won seven medals at the 2024 Olympics: two gold, two silver and three bronze.
As of now, Ukraine is in 19th place in the medal standings. The Games in Paris will last until August 11.
