Former physical training coach of the capital's “Kyiv-Basket” and “Budivelnik” Dmytro Markhovsky died in the war against the Russian invaders.
His father Oleg reported the tragic news on his Facebook page. According to him, Dmitry died in January 2024, until recently he was considered missing.
Dmitry was mobilized into the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine at the end of September 2023, he was a combat medic. Last summer, Markhovsky worked with the Ukrainian women's teams at continental competitions.
“Exactly 31 years ago on this day, in Maternity Hospital #1 in Kyiv, on the glorious Pechersk slopes of the Dnieper, my son Dmitry was born. He had been doing what he loved since his teenage years – he played basketball and professionally coached basketball players.
But in January of this year, he went to heaven, defending what was most dear to him: his city, his family, his Earth, his values. At the front, he was a combat medic, saving the lives of his brothers.
His last words, according to eyewitnesses of that battle near the village of Robotino in Zaporozhye, were the phrase: “I'm fine, I can continue to provide assistance!”
“We will all die. Unfortunately, we do not choose our death. But we can meet it with dignity, so that we will be remembered as men.” This is one of the monologues of the main character of the film “Gladiator”.
Son, you lived your life with dignity. Now you are my heavenly protector! I miss you, grieve and am proud of you at the same time! Blessed memory to you – Son, Warrior, Coach!”, – wrote Oleg Markhovsky.
Recall that at the end of last year, as a result of Russian missile attacks in Lviv, famous Ukrainian basketball player Viktor Kobzisty died.
