This is the first victory for Ukrainian clubs in the main round of the current European Cup competition.
Donetsk “Shakhtar" beat Swiss “Young Boys" in the match of the fourth round of the main stage of the League championsseason 2024/25. The nominally home match for the Miners at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, ended with a score of 2:1.
The current champion of Ukraine could have opened the scoring already in the 9th minute of the match, but Kevin's goal, who finished the ball into the net after a save by the goalkeeper of the Swiss team Marvin Keller on a shot by Artem Bondarenko, was cancelled due to Eginaldo's offside.
In the 15th minute, the Miners had another great opportunity to take the lead, but Eginaldo shot straight at the goalkeeper from the right flank of the penalty area.
In the 27th minute, Young Boys took the lead quite unexpectedly. Kastriot Imeri took advantage of Bondarenko's gross mistake near his own goal and shot low from the penalty area past Dmytro Riznyk.
Marino Pusic's men quickly equalized. In the 31st minute, Alexander Zubkov sent the ball into an empty net after Georgy Sudakov's run and cross from the left flank.
And already in the 41st minute, the “orange-blacks” took the lead. Sudakov played with Kevin on the right flank of the attack, extended the ball to the penalty line and accurately shot low into the far corner.
In the second half, it was also difficult for the miners, because the opponent attacked and tried to avoid defeat, but the well-coordinated actions of the Donetsk team in defense allowed them not to concede and win their first victory in the current season of the Champions League.
This is also the first victory for Ukrainian clubs in the main round of the current European Cup competition, since in the first three rounds of the Champions League and the Europa League, neither Shakhtar nor Dynamo scored a single goal.
