The match was not played due to provocations by Romanian fans.
The Union of European Football (UEFA) has determined the fate of the match of the 5th round of the group stage of the 2024/25 Nations League between the national teams of Romania and Kosovo, which did not finished playing because of a political scandal.
The UEFA Disciplinary Committee awarded the Kosovars a technical defeat with a score of 0:3, the organization's official website reports.
The match, which took place on November 15 in Bucharest, was not completed due to the behavior of the Romanian fans. During the stoppage time of the second half, with the score 0:0, they began chanting insults against the opposing team, including the phrase “Kosovo is Serbia”.
A Serbian flag was also seen in the stands, and fans threw various objects onto the field, including pieces of plastic chairs.
The match was suspended. Later, the Romanian national team players and referees returned to the field, unlike the Kosovo team players, who refused to continue the match. As a result, the Danish referee Morten Krogh blew the final whistle early.
In its decision, UEFA noted that the Kosovars were responsible for the match not being completed, so they were awarded a technical defeat. The team was also ordered to pay a fine of 6,000 euros for the improper behavior of its players.
The Romanian national team was also punished – a fine of 128,000 euros due to the unacceptable behavior of its fans.
Thus, the Romanian national team, led by Mircea Lucescu, scored the maximum possible 18 points and won its group of the League of Nations, receiving promotion to Division B.
The Kosovo national team (12 points) took second place in this quartet and will play in the playoffs for the right to move up a class.
Also in this group were Cyprus (6 points – remains in League C) and Lithuania (0 points – relegated to League D).
