FA seeks to extend Millwall goalkeeper's ban

  • The Football Association (FA) wants to extend the ban of Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts for a bad foul on Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Matet.

Roberts received a straight red card after his left boot hit the striker's head while attempting to clear the ball early in the FA Cup fifth round tie between the two London sides.

Referee Michael Oliver initially did not call a foul, but VAR recommended that he review the incident, after which Roberts was sent off.

Mateta was given oxygen on the pitch before being carried out on a stretcher in a cervical collar and taken straight to St George's Hospital, where he received specialist care and 25 stitches for a deep cut to his left ear. He was discharged the same day.

The FA has already confirmed that it has lodged an appeal against the extension of the disqualification period.

“The FA states that in the circumstances the standard penalty for this foul is clearly inadequate,” the official statement said.

Serious foul play usually results in a three-match ban for a footballer. Roberts has until Thursday, March 6, to file his response.
