American businessman Bill Chisholm is ready to buy the NBA club Boston Celtics for $6.1 billion .

The deal would be the largest in the history of North American sports leagues. The current record is held by the sale of the NFL's Washington Commanders for $6.05 billion in 2023.

Current CEO Wyke Grousbeck will remain in his position through the 2027-28 season. The decision was made by the Grousbeck family, the current owners of the Celtics, when they announced their intention to sell the team last year. The majority stake in the team will be sold in 2025, with the remainder of the shares to be sold in 2028.

Wyke Grousbeck and his partners became the owners of the Celtics in 2002. At that time, the businessmen paid $360 million for the NBA team.

Chisholm is a managing partner at Symphony Technology Group, an investment firm that will participate in the purchase of the NBA team, including current Celtics co-owner Rob Hale and Related Companies President Bruce Beal Jr.

The Boston Celtics have won a record 18 NBA championships. This season, the Celtics are second in the Eastern Conference and have secured a playoff spot.
