Ukraine’s top tennis player Elina Svitolina (WTA No. 13) advanced to the 1/8 finals of the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament in Montreal, Canada, reports FBC.net.ua, with reference to Suspilne.
In the third round, Svitolina easily defeated the “neutral” Russian Anna Kalinskaya (WTA No. 31), winning 6-1, 6-1 in 56 minutes. This was the third meeting between the two players, and Svitolina emerged victorious in all of them.
After the match, Svitolina commented that she was pleased with her performance: “It was a good match from my side. I really enjoy playing in Canada. I have pleasant memories from my victory in Toronto a few years ago, and, of course, such great support adds extra energy,” she said during the press conference, as cited by Tribuna.
Earlier, in the same tournament, Svitolina defeated the “neutral” Camila Rakhimova in straight sets.
Svitolina’s next opponent will be American Amanda Anisimova, the world No. 7. This summer, Anisimova suffered a crushing loss in the Wimbledon final. Their meeting will be their first since 2021. Svitolina leads their head-to-head with three wins out of four matches.
In the fourth round of the tournament in Montreal, three Ukrainian players will participate: Marta Kostyuk, Dayana Yastremska, and Elina Svitolina.
