Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk has made history by becoming the first player from Ukraine to reach the round of 16 in both singles and doubles at the same Grand Slam tournament. She achieved this milestone at the US Open 2025, reports the Baltimore Chronicle.
Earlier this week, the 21-year-old from Kyiv advanced to the fourth round of the singles competition at the US Open for the first time in her career. On her way to the round of 16, she defeated Britain’s Katie Boulter, Turkey’s Zeynep Sönmez, and France’s Diane Parry.
Kostyuk is also competing in doubles alongside Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse. In the opening round, the pair beat Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro and Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto. In the second round, they secured a major upset against the 14th-seeded team of Beatriz Haddad Maia from Brazil and Laura Siegemund of Germany.
As a result, Kostyuk advanced to the round of 16 at the US Open 2025 in both singles and doubles, setting a national record. No other Ukrainian female tennis player had previously achieved this feat at a single Grand Slam event.
Other Ukrainian players have reached at least the round of 16 in both singles and doubles at different majors, but not within the same tournament. Kateryna Bondarenko reached the US Open round of 16 in 2009 in singles and in 2008 in doubles, while her sister Alona Bondarenko did the same at the Australian Open — in singles in 2010 and in doubles in 2008.
Kostyuk herself had already recorded notable results in previous years. She reached the round of 16 at Roland Garros in singles in 2021 and in doubles in 2020, 2022, 2023, and 2024. At the Australian Open, she advanced to the singles round of 16 in 2024 and in doubles in 2022, 2023, and 2025.
Among other Ukrainians, Lesia Tsurenko reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon in 2023 in singles and in 2017 in doubles. Dayana Yastremska did so at the Australian Open — in singles in 2024 and in doubles in 2022.
