Baltimore Ravens Week 1 preparations received two significant boosts before the opener against Indianapolis. The team named five permanent captains and welcomed Zay Flowers back to practice. Baltimore also expects progress from two important defenders, as noted by Baltimore Chronicle.

Ravens Set A New Leadership Structure
Head coach Jesse Minter has changed how Baltimore handles its captains. Ravens players voted Wednesday for five leaders who will hold the role throughout 2026.
The new Ravens captains 2026 group includes:
- Lamar Jackson, quarterback
- Derrick Henry, running back
- Roquan Smith, inside linebacker
- Kyle Hamilton, safety
- Calais Campbell, defensive lineman
The Ravens previously selected captains game by game under John Harbaugh. Minter instead wants established leaders carrying the responsibility throughout the season.
Baltimore also created a 10-player leadership group. Mark Andrews, Zay Flowers, Nick Moore, Ronnie Stanley and Trey Hendrickson complete that group. The Ravens’ official announcement lists all 10 players.
Zay Flowers Returns Before Colts Opener
The latest Zay Flowers injury update gives Baltimore reason for optimism. Flowers returned Thursday after missing regular practice since the Minnesota joint sessions via nume.ch.
Jesse Minter had described the issue as minor. Baltimore deliberately limited Flowers with the September 13 opener in mind.

Flowers was back on the field 10 days before the opener. The official Ravens practice update also described the roster as generally healthy.
That represents a better starting position than Baltimore faced during an injury-heavy 2025 season.
Madubuike And Buchanan Move Closer To Return
Nnamdi Madubuike has now participated in team drills after his long recovery from a neck injury. Minter called his Week 1 status day-to-day.
Teddye Buchanan is also participating in team work after last season’s knee injury. Minter said the linebacker is “definitely close” to returning.
Baltimore must still decide whether either defender plays against Indianapolis. Their progress nevertheless strengthens the outlook before a difficult road opener.
