Volkswagen has started production of the cheapest crossover based on the Polo hatchback. In Brazil, the budget car Volkswagen Tera has entered the assembly line.

RBC-Ukraine reports this with reference to the company’s press service.

The four-meter car with semi-independent rear suspension and front-wheel drive is expected to cost from $17.2 thousand, and the top version will cost $24 thousand.

The Volkswagen Tera premiered at the beginning of the month, and now production has begun at the plant in Taubate (Brazil). The same site is used to assemble the Polo on the MQB A0 architecture. Although the technology has not been confirmed, it is believed that the crossover will receive a 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbo engine with 116 horsepower and a 6-speed automatic.

In the official photos, you can see only the top version with LED optics, fashionable alloy wheels, a media system tablet and a touch-sensitive climate control unit. However, the basic Volkswagen Tera will be utilitarian, because otherwise it will not be possible to offer an attractive price. According to unofficial data, there will be a version with an atmospheric engine and “mechanics”.

In Brazil, sales of the Volkswagen Tera will start in late spring, and by the end of the year, the model will be offered in other American markets, Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Uruguay. Then the crossover may appear in Mexico and Africa.
