Cummins has introduced its first gasoline engine in its 100-year history. The renowned American manufacturer of diesel and gas engines is preparing for stricter emissions standards.

The new powertrain is based on the familiar 6.7-liter inline six-cylinder diesel engine and is adapted to a different type of fuel. It's all about upcoming federal and Californian environmental requirements in the United States.
New emission standards for trucks in the US will come into force from the 2027 model year. Cummins B6.7 Octane can run on the American analogue of AI-92 gasoline, while the new unit is devoid of complex exhaust gas recirculation systems, does not require urea injection and is easier to maintain than diesel. The oil change interval is 24 thousand kilometers. Several options with a capacity of 200-300 horsepower are provided.
According to Cummins, the gasoline unit is not inferior in peak torque values to a similar 6.7-liter diesel. However, at low revs, the engine on “heavy” fuel is still better. Fuel consumption has not yet been disclosed, but Cummins promises a ten percent saving compared to other gasoline units.
The Cummins gasoline engine will be paired with an 8-speed automatic Paccar TX-8, and the first to receive the engine will be Kenworth medium-duty trucks. The reliability of the new engine has been confirmed during tests with a total mileage of 3.2 million kilometers.
