Volkswagen Golf GTI will become more powerful with an updated turbo engine. Insiders reported that the Chinese version of the model will switch to a 2.0-liter EA888 engine of the fifth generation.

The power of the power plant will increase by almost a quarter: from the current 220 horsepower and 350 Nm to 272 horsepower and 400 Nm. However, we will have to wait until the second half of 2028 for such a Volkswagen Golf GTI. This may mean that the life cycle of the hot hatch will not be interrupted in this decade.
It was previously reported that the ninth-generation Volkswagen Golf should switch to electric traction in 2029. But it is possible that the electrification of the iconic model is not expected in all markets. In China, gasoline models may still be needed for a long time, so the German brand invested in upgrading the EA888 engine. The updated unit debuted on the second-generation Volkswagen Teramont.
In addition, Volkswagen plans to introduce 11 new models exclusively for the Chinese market in the coming years. It is noted that among the 11 new cars, six will be fully electric, two will be plug-in hybrids, and two more hybrid models with an increased range due to the installed internal combustion engine and one car with a classic gasoline internal combustion engine.
