In Italy, Stellantis's car production has fallen sharply. It was the worst in almost 70 years: from January to March, local plants produced only 109,900 passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, 36 percent less than in the first quarter of 2024.
RBC-Ukraine reports this with reference to Automotive News.
According to statistics, the Italian auto industry's performance was worse only in the middle of the last century, and analysts see no reason for improvement against the backdrop of new US tariffs and weak demand in Europe.
Car production fell at all six Stellantis plants in Italy. The Dodge Hornet SUV, one of the few Stellantis models assembled in Europe for the North American market, suffered the most. In three months, the Pomigliano plant produced 1,356 Hornets, down 80 percent from the same period last year.
Maserati production rates, in turn, fell by 72 percent to 1,033 units, and Alfa Romeo by 52 percent to 10,104 cars.
Donald Trump's tariffs and the shift to electric cars, which are selling worse than internal combustion engines, are creating a “perfect storm” in the industry, say representatives of the local FIM-CISL union. Perhaps things will be partially corrected by new models that Stellantis will put on the assembly line. However, this will not happen until the end of 2025. Thus, a new hybrid Fiat 500 and a new Alfa Romeo Stelvio will be launched.
